A Simple But Surprisingly Fun Film in Work It

We have seen this picture before: simplistic, cliched and by the book, Work It is sure going to be one of those Netflix movies that have been poorly done. On the contrary, however, Work It does manage to integrate these tropes and core concepts producing an almost comedic and heartening drama. True, it is not going to win any Oscars in the near future. No, it won’t make people talk for week or even months for that matter. But yes, it’s a good movie and is ideal for watching over the weekend because after all, it’s a pretty easy and relaxing movie.

Central to this dancing drama is Quinn who is the goofball and occasional narrator of the film. With a combination of nerdy Ted Talk style and awkward social interactions, Quinn’s aspirations of attending her dream college are dampened. ‘Why’ you may ask? What else do you need, why shouldn’t, their students have the same involvement at other parts of the student life too? To do this, she has to lie about being a fancy dancer with the Thunderbirds. Her only problem is she can’t dance and she got kicked out of that very group for screwing up the lights earlier in the film.

As one would expect, Quinn Kotler has aspirations of winning a dance competition and resolves to form her own group for that purpose. Throughout the journey Quinn learns the significance of friendship as she recruits a motley crew of kids to her cause, who fit into the typical stereotypes. This is perhaps, the biggest issue as well with this film.

The only reference to characterisation is to Quinn and , to a certain level, Jas. Most of the supporting characters are “the nerdy one”, “the goth one” etc. meaning there isn’t much in terms of their personality. This is a rather poor Call of Duty game remade in a sense. The evil Thunderbirds group consisting of Julliard Pembroke is overlooked here and that is the group that Quinn’s dancing group (TBD) battles throughout the movie. The film ticks the boxes of what is expected of it in this type of film and there is no surprise in sight.

However, Work It is not exactly aiming to change the world with its depiction. Rather, it appears to inject some much appreciated choreography, clips and laughter to break up the monotony. The former comes with the territory of choreographed routines, and while a couple of decent moves do exist, do not go into this expecting some Diversity level body popping.

The former side, is what this film manages to portray the best. Expect some pretty hilarious moments here and there since I did laugh out loud at times. The dark humour surrounding Harold’s character in the nursing home has got to be the best one so far but there’s a range of other types of humour as well. Slapstick, sarcasm and your goofy absurdist styles all feature which help add spice to the proceedings.

Work It is unlikely to send you in an uncontrolled rage. You have witnessed this narrative pattern a million times over and the characterisation can also be said to be quite generic. Even so, there is a certain warmth in this movie that lets you watch it without any effort. It’s a pretty basic plot but in the end, these weak points make the film good enough to be classified as a simple feel-good movie.
