The classic story of a maiden in distress has a twist in ‘Miss Bala’ where the maiden saves herself.
Miss Bala is the story of an American make up artist Gloria Fuentes, a Mexican born in Tijuana who followed her family to the United States when she was little, living in Los Angeles.
When Gloria comes back to Tijuana, she helps her childhood friend Suzu as she competes for the title of Miss Baja. Trouble begins at the nightclub when Saucedo, the contest organizer that Gloria accompanies Suzu to meet, gets into an altercation. Gloria loses Suzu when Las Estrellas, a gang belonging to drug lord Lino, opens fire at the club.
On the search for her friend, she somehow ends up in the middle of life and death crossfire with drug cartels, the DEA, and the CIA, all people she has never dealt with before but must do so if she wants to rescue her friend.
The story of Miss Bala keeps on emphasizing the narrative attached to the titular character as she, despite being the one in control, struggles with the views of men towards women, including lawmen and criminals. The predictable script makes for an interesting video due to a combination of gunfights as well as a great story with plenty of unexpected twists.
Despite the fact that Gloria is a stranger to both the people and the drugs world, the script excels in ensuring that she remains a human being through brilliantly well depicted emotions of fear and anxiety in her survival mission.
The casting in this film is amazing, all or mostly Latinos. Gloria is portrayed as some unknown figure in her world and the actress struggles to find a balance in her more complex feelings. Gloria is shrewd and pragmatic, always getting out of tight spots quickly with some light improvisation. She is courageous as well as committed. Although she initially comes off as shy, inexperienced and vulnerable, she slowly emerges as a ruthless fighter, being coercive enough to shoot her way through to save her friend.
Lino is a charming leader of a cartel but is cruel and manipulative. He is sleazy in getting Gloria to trust him and be bewitched and almost succeeds, which is almost indeed a far going betrayal of trust. Every being has one or many enemies that guard against their actions, and for Lino, your chief enemy is the grenadiers’ head Saucedo. It could have been a vice with no human opinion, yet they have said that he is a good person. It’s enough to always convince everyone in the beauty pageant for Miss Baja, which he sponsors.
Other characters share the international intelligence agency’s DEA officer Brian. He appears cool and composed, but he has a vengeful and selfish side to him. He would have brainwashed Gloria and made her think that he is protecting her but rather, his only ambition is to terminate Lino. Suzu who is one of Gloria’s friends is so naïve and so much in the dark. Her close friendship with Gloria is satisfying and shows her loyalty as she strives to know and liberate her.
She deserves Such a refreshing perspective, especially after Chava her brother comes into the picture and how he is refreshing to the impressive, cute, heavy plot. Speaking of impressive, Lino’s confidant, Pollo, tipped the scales even further because he was loyal but merciless and hated Gloria.
The thrill of the action sequences for the series is of a different level and is one of its biggest strengths. The woman who becomes a victim of repeated kidnappings and threats only goes on to get herself controlled by the people below her, and is so woven that it does not need further embellishments.
A few glaring plot deficiencies exist including the script failing to live up to the characterization of the villains and the explanation as to why there is a war between the corrupt police and the cartel. If the script had dealt with all the angles and not just thrown violent action scenes at the audience without any explanation as to why they are present, the film could have turned out much better.
Still, it sends you on quite an emotional ride as you try to root for the character of Gloria which makes it worthy of being added to your watch list.
