Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)

Parochial school teacher Nancy Stokes (played by Emma Thompson) who for the last two years has been a widow is the protagonist of Good Luck to You, Leo Grande screenplay which is written by Sophie Hyde and Katy Brand. Everything seems normal for her and most likely she was dutiful and did not deviate from her expectations, yet she feels unexcited since sexually she is unfulfilled. In an awkward moment, she engages a sex worker called Leo Grande (Daryl McCormack) who is expected to show her how to take pleasure in sex.

What makes Nancy to employ a prostitute and for what?

Nancy Stokes (not her real name) is sixty something years and has never had an orgasm in her life. She lived in matrimony, however, her relationship was never smooth and always led to an unhappy woman. There may have been nothing left for me except to fade quietly in the background, doing everything properly at the very end.

So when Leo Grande (clearly not his real name) questions her about her fantasies in the hotel room, where they are supposed to meet for the first time, Nancy is clearly anxious What is your fantasy? ‘To have sex, with you, do you mind?’ is her response as she seems panicky asking him to say yes. This should start as a pain free ‘how could he say no?’

But she creates a list containing sexual activities which she has never done before. This strengthens the bond in their later meetings (they will have multiple more) where they have discussions on the same topics in more detail. LEO however, is an active participant in the process instead of a passive observer.

In what ways does Leo assist Nancy?

Nancy employs Leo for three sessions. Keep in mind that she does have an objective and she does tend to be somewhat strong-willed, but it is only a whole portion of their time and they spend most of it conversing.

Nancy and Leo’s personalities are in sharp contrast. Leon has always been more sexually liberated while Nancy has been more sexually restrained and judgmental all her life.

In the beginning, Nancy is perplexed. She wants to know how he can enjoy so little in morals and still remain and go into that line of work. She questions how he would want to be intimate with some clients and her as well, and is even embarrassed at her age.

Nancy, on the other hand, is relatively patient and understanding with her questions and concerns. Leo assists her in overcoming her discomfort. He elicits physical enjoyment from her. He speaks about his work with his clients and how he enjoys this work.

Day after day, Nancy begins to comprehend a little more of what it is that Leo does for a living, she is less ashamed of her body and starts seeking out the pleasure.

What provoke Leo to angrily walk out in the third session?

There are no issues during Nancy’s third session with Leo. They have built a level of interaction that is friendly and they have also completed quite a few tasks from the list Nancy had given them.

They have become comfortable to speak about their families as well, however, Nancy talks about a son who engages her less and a daughter running wild, while Leo mentions a brother he gets along well with who believes he is working in an oil rig without disclosing how many siblings he has.

In her thirst to discover more, Nancy oversteps when she looks into the background of Leo’s name and realizes that this is Connor. And that meeting outside their sessions would be a possibility along with the idea of being friends.

Leo is beyond furious. “This is Leo Grande,” he says. “I made him and I’m proud of him.” He tells her that all this time he was clear about the son who never existed.

Nancy focuses on the never existing son aspect, so Konieczko proceeds telling her this time about his mother. He tells her he never had a son, instead, he claims to be only a ghost in the family.

Upon hearing what happened between the mother and son, of course, he hopes the woman would not ask him what did he do to his mother, with fierceness screaming out in all his veins. His mother abandoned him when he was 15 years old.

Leo shifts attention on himself and how Nancy interested herself in his life only after hearing his mother disowned him. That she has found someone ‘exotic and broken’ of her liking, who possesses the traits she desired most.

What is the final scene in ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande’ about?

The film, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, concludes the last encounter between Nancy and Leo. As she apologizes for having been overly intrusive, Nancy pays for extending a session to have coffee with Leo.

Everybody, according to Leo, knows what Leo works because he told his brother. What had his mom said as well does she still not speak of him?

And Nancy is silly enough to not have said that she had had love for children of her own and is somehow ashamed of them. She rushes to bring over the waitress, one of her students, Becky Foster. I made a mistake and should never have labeling her and the other girls “sluts” because looks made him feel that way. She tells Becky that she has figured out that pleasure is indeed wonderful, and introduces her to Leo, who is by profession a sex worker.

Nancy and Leo are the last to leave in order to have sexual intercourse upstairs when Nancy achieves her first purely self generated orgasm.

After his departure, Nancy changes from her dress, gazes at herself in the mirror, and sweetly grins. She is finally happy with her body, which is a pleasant surprise.
