Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022)

Any loyal supporter of the Continental soap got used to the lightness typical for the British costume drama with a wedding for the expecting guests, a glimpse of the splendid Downton house, a finger on the piano and a bow on the violin in a cheerful attempt at mating. Show directed by Curtis is unlikely to have ever high stakes and has unlimited scope for fans, Julian Fellows writes in his newest Downton project. In this way, A New Era does not have a self contained high point, but rather serves as the appealing add on to the earlier episodes. Fans of the series in general will find A New Era most to their liking the film makes the viewer feel that if there are any loose ends in the show, the movie has taken care of them as the entire movie just reeks of the trademark Downton feel quite familiar to the audience.

It is in the year 1928 that the historical drama series Downton Abbey, showcases and winds down with Violet Crawley, played by the talented Maggie Smith, receiving terrible news. The Marquis de Montmirail among other lovers Montmirail has, as a given, dies and leaves her a villa in southern France that was once theirs. Lady Grantham indicates that she will transfer the villa to her granddaughter Sybbie, which draws Robert, Cora, and other members of the family to take a trip to France to meet the new Marquis. Although the new Marquis respects his father’s orders, his mother does not want to give up the villa without a fight.

Returning back to Downton, Lady Mary, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, along with the household help get ready to start the so called “new chapter”. Filmmaker Jack Barber played by Hugh Dancy, brings film stars Guy Dexter and Myrna Dalgleish with him to begin shooting for his new film, The Gambler, and the place is none other than Downton itself. While Jack’s attention on Mary tests her loyalty towards her missing husband, the specific film, however, runs into difficulties completing the film according to its schedule.

In the end, all the individual characters of Downton are tied up nicely and so, it includes the best moments for the fans of the movie. However, it is the two major story arcs of the film which clearly seem to be the weaknesses of the film. In one, the contest is not even taken to its logical conclusion. In the other, it is acceptable to steal the storyline from Singin’ in the Rain. And in both, it appears to be perfectly alright to make disparaging remarks about cultural inconsistencies, about the French who have ‘lesser’ ways of doing things and about some ‘horrendous’ American regional accents.

But we would be lying to ourselves if we claimed that the excitement of Downton Abbey: A New Era lay in its first ever story and social context. The English period drama for a long time has found in the hearts of fans a place of an entertaining comfort film representative of the more lavish endeavors of high society and the conflict amongst the people who attend to them all set in an environment of mild and easily resolved conflict. Fellowes does not only retain the adored elements of the franchise’s coming back effortlessly; he even improves on the concept by resolving unresolved issues and amending the previous errors of the series (e.g., the show’s only gay character’s consistent mistreatment).

When all is said and done, the storyline of the new Downton Abbey movie is rather uninteresting. Besides, this isn’t quite the end of the world as we know it. Shocking, is it not? This is Downton Abbey. Always evolving and presented with new challenges, the aristocracy now has the chance to watch ‘movies.’ Who thought this was a good idea?!

The film is nevertheless, lovely, fascinating, and entertaining in other words, almost everything that could have been expected by the audience. For those times when you want to be lulled into submission, especially by the television characters and tear-jerking storylines that you loved from the original show, Downton Abbey: A New Era is perfect.
