Episode 6

Doctor Slump’s episode 6 begins with a monologue from Ha-neul’s perspective where she tries to illustrate„ how Vera feels or experiences depression”. Sometimes she just wants to lie down on the bed and do absolutely nothing; sometimes she tries to make an effort to try some kind of change, but in vain, in most cases. She learns about a psychological phenomenon called ‘Ambivalence’, which describes different and conflicting emotions. How she perceives the world is very different than how others see it.

The day after she goes up to the rooftop leaves Jeong-woo as she embraces him to comfort him before deciding to head out for a run. JEong-woo learns of a call regarding the hidden camera and his impression of them and was warned that the police were unable to retake the impression from several sources. He finds Ha-neul during her morning jog and she accuses him of suffering from PTSD in his eyes.

She even communicated that she was unaware and then made her thoughts known to him. She takes him to have a glass of wine so that he can sleep better, supple cotton sleepwear so that he is comfortable, and goes on to say that she has begun washing his sheets because she is interested in him and that she is confused. So they agree that such matters would be dealt with at a later stage. In a nutshell, they are attracted to each other, but both of them are psychologically in a bad state and prefer to send each other signals instead.

Ha-neul encourages Jeong-woo to go to the mental health clinic, but Jeong-woo is not ready for that yet. Hong-ran goes to see Ha-neul and finds out that she has been turned down by Jeong-woo without any knowledge of the happenings between them. She pulls Ha-neul out of the house and turns to Jeong-woo to stare at him. At the same time, she gets a text from Dae-young who wants to go out with her.

Jeong-woo sends a message to Ha-neul to play the game of Go-stop, which he is sure that she finds useless and eventually remembers that it is the trigger code for his PTSD and runs up the stairs. Although, Jeong-woo had no intention to bother her rather he only wanted to inform her about accompanying her to the clinic.

Hong-ran is awakened by the cries of her son who is now 5 years old, this was because he did not eat properly the previous night. It is established that while his mother is working, he lives with his grandmother and she says that once he goes to primary school, she will move in with him.

The boys see a doctor while the girls wait. Sometime later, on their way back, Ha-Neul pretends to look for 500 won in order to cheer Jeong-woo. All the neighborhood members feel disgusted by it. They find some old-school computer games using the money they previously earned, meanwhile a group of children is waiting for them to come back but is disappointed. Finally, Jeong-woo decides that Ha-neul should let the children play and he will bring her back later. They go to a karaoke bar and since Ha-neul has never heard music in her life, every time Jeong-woo sings a song, she thinks he’s saying he loves her. She later regrets it when Jeong-woo explains the meaning of the song. She feels happy because she thinks her attention was able to help him.

On their way, she encounters an old classmate of hers from high school who was ranked third in her class. The girl was excited to see him and remembered Jeong-woo’s every public appearance.

Later, she explains to the two how Jeong-woo used to talk to her a lot, or rather ‘hang around her’ a lot, clustering near her while having lunch, always giving her his entire eraser when she forgot hers, or creating a protective zone around her during hostile situations. Ha-neul gets irked to the point of no return. Jeong-woo, after being pushed by his peer who leaves with the intent of getting back in touch with him, gets headbutted and sulks off.

As if it were a movie, or more like in slow motion, Ha-neul approaches them in the canteen looking for Jeong and talks about taking him out. He remembers about all the popcorn things he has been blabbering on about. When he was fully concentrated on ‘bullying’ Ha-neul, he was being more considerate towards the girl, which led her to misinterpret the feelings. Ha-neul then speaks to her and after understanding a couple of things and realizing that she is being utterly lunatic, storms off to meet Jeong with dumplings from his uncle’s restaurant as an olive branch.

To make matters worse, Dae-young and Hong-ran meet and Dae-young starts off about how he has a channel on Neo-tube. While Hong-ran thinks it’s a bit inappropriate for him, he finds the fact that she has blocked him from his channel when he knows the entirety of the universe, which is not true. She reminds herself of the unfortunate incident wherein she remembers this weird channel on Neo-tube. It’s pretty obvious that the date has gone awry.

As they are parting, Hong-ran is indignant at Jeong-woo’s behavior toward Ha-neul while Dae-young is defending him. Dae-young is deaf to thunderous quarrels above him, feels dragonfly and catches it; Hong- ran asks Dae-young to go with her to collect bugs.

Ha-neul shares a beer and dumplings with Jeong-woo. She admits how envious she was over an incident with him. She is telling him that she is not certain and that she is in a state of indecisiveness. Jeong-woo says to her that he has feelings for her. The inexplicably embarrassed Ha-neul looks as he explains that he feels addicted to her. As she comes back to the room with extra snacks, Kyung-min goes near them and Ha-neul stands up leaving them both.

Kyung-min and Jeong-woo exchange opinions on the actualities and Jeong-woo expresses confidence that what Kyung-min claimed to him is a fact. Kyung-min confirms he said it because he is worried for Jeong-woo. On another note, law enforcement officers have randomized recording of the sighting some burglar. In the course of returning home, Jeong-woo sees a figure behind him and runs after the man but in the process gets himself hurt and simply blacks out.

Ha-jeong, in the meantime, discovers a hidden camera in Jeong-woo’s bedroom, and there is someone supposedly present but it is not Jeong-woo.

The Episode Review

In comparison to the last episode, this episode was a step above. It’s touching and insightful to observe Shin-hye, playing Ha-neul, and making such a solid effort to reliably embody the character. This story gets across that mental illness is not always overtly catastrophic as in a lot of the cases, it simply becomes an invisible thief of time, feelings, emotions or an alternate reality, sometimes eternal, filled with despair. It’s time people started accepting that mental illness can happen to anyone and it doesn’t have to be a disgrace.

While Ha-neul and Jeong-woo’s interactions were just as cliché as any other and at some points quite awkward to watch, the moment in which they spoke about feelings and the need to proceed with those feelings was so wholesome. As a classmate, Lee Sung-kyung’s cameo was fantastic! Absolutely admiring Kyung-min’s character is our number one disappointment in the K-drama for sure. What do you think of the show up until this point? We encourage you to leave your opinions in the section below, and we shall see you again in the upcoming week!
