Dark Phoenix (2019)

The X-Men series gets its twelfth edition in Dark Phoenix, a movie that once again depicts the comic story bearing the same name. Jean Grey fuses with the Phoenix Force during a space mission. In an uncontrollable rage, Jean Dark Phoenix creates a public spectacle by killing Mystique and destroys the psychic shields which Professor Xavier had planted in her mind during childhood.

Divided into certain factions: Cyclops and a few others endeavor to rescue Jean, while Magneto and Beast lead the faction bent on her annihilation. A girl named Vuk, who is a shape shifting alien, uses the girl to gain power to dethrone Jean. Despite the recriminations, the reason for her perilous way of life is to dominate Earth for her species.

Who dies in Dark Phoenix?

While in battle, the X-Men and Magneto are arrested by the military but later on manage to escape and confront Vuk and the other aliens. Jean restores her senses, takes away Vuk and kill the shapeshifter to rescue her friends, in the process apparently giving her life for that cause.

Realizing his guilt over his students’ deaths causes Xavier to abandon both the school as well as the X-Men. Despite this, Magneto comes to find him in Paris to offer such ‘a community’. Although, we do not see if he decides to accept it.

The school, now called the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, after a character in the comics, has also changed management. A few other older X-Men such as storm, and Quicksilver become teachers while Beast becomes the new headmaster.

But even this is not the conclusion of the movie. We see a giant phoenix flying in the sky in the last frame of the movie suggesting that Jean is somehow still alive.

Where does the plot of the Dark Phoenix movie stray away from the comics?

It is true that the film bears no resemblance to the comics, but still in both, Jean gets her powers during a space mission. However, after that, the majority of things will be fresh for viewers.

One of the most notable of these is Wolverine’s absence in the film. Quite a dominant character in the arc and one of the reasons through which the storyline got so much popularity. But, the boy is not a member of the X-Men team in the film, so there is no way to include him in the story.

In the comics, the manipulation of Jean was orchestrated not by the alien Vuk but the Hellfire Club instead. One of the Hellfire Club’s members, Mastermind, uses his illusions to seduce Jean Grey and thus, causes her to turn into Dark Phoenix. X-Men: First Class features other characters belonging to the evil team, Shaw and Emma Frost.

The last battle does not take place on earth too. The Shi’ar Empire (who are also not in this movie) protects the Earth after Dark Phoenix kills a few million aliens in her rage. Jean gets help from the X-Men military soldiers known as the Imperial Guard who are based on moon. However, she was not saved due to the lack of their sacrifices. After regaining consciousness, the girl decides to unleash a terrible weapon that kills herself and saves her comrades and the entire universe.

The same also applies to the universe. Professor Xavier does not leave the school building but remains there as a headmaster and when a member of the team does quit, it is Cyclops. Also, Storm and none of the X-Men present are teachers. Although Quicksilver is a character with great accolades from the films, he is not a member of the group with this power.

There are other ways in which the comic differs from the film such as including different aliens or the fact that they do not change the name of the school, though, those are the most significant differences.
