Believer is a South Korean Film released in 2018. The film is quite action laden and stars the likes of Cho Jin-woong, Cha Seung-won and Ryu Jun-yeol. We meet the main character Detective Won Ho-Jin-Woong, and a few more characters in the movie who two years prior were looking to bust drug lord Mr Lee, who is yet to be captured.
What is the relationship between Won Ho and Rak?
Current events in the film depict significant drug trafficking in Seoul, which has piqued Won Ho’s interest. Using a minor informant, he tries to learn about a Mr. Lee, who is the major drug trafficker. He has been going after Mr Lee for a period of two years now and it appears that this time he may get the break he needs. His informant is killed but before she dies, she manages to assist him by giving him intel about Mr Lee.
Following the death of the informant, the police detectives investigating the case of Mr Lee come under attack and one of his drug manufacturing facilities is destroyed and a new eyewitness surfaces. The new eye witness turned out to be Rak who was employed by Mr Lee and helped him sell drugs. To lessen his criminal charges, Rak teams up with the police to try to drag Mr Lee out of hiding.
The law enforcers are optimistic that the drug lord will finally be apprehended now that they have the evidence pointing towards a drug trade with a Chinese-Korean accomplice.
What steps are followed in the investigation?
Of course, it is not easy a task to lure such a shrewd and level headed drug dealer as Mr Lee. And, without any means, Won Ho has to go undercover and meet the Chinese-Korean supplier who ends up nearly killing him with an overdose. During the investigation, he narrowly misses death several times but like a cat with nine lives, he lives through it.
Rak’s temporary absence proves to be helpful to the case, as he provides them with some clues and appears to be the man they are looking for. As expected, the police suffers some tough defeats throughout the case. This only pushes them to work more and avenge their slain colleagues.
The word in the streets is the name Mr Lee and it is being spread by every drug blockade taker.
At first, the investigation yields a range of potential suspects, chief of whom being a chaebol Brian Lee attempting to involve himself with Won Ho and his team. Brian, helming his own lucrative industrial studio with a formidable drug testing laboratory, executes a masquerade presenting himself as such a Mr Lee. Brian helps in convincing Won Ho that he is the truck lord that has been eluding him for a few months now. But that can’t be the truth because Brian is nothing more than a schemer attempting to takeover Mr Lee’s companies.
Last but not least, Brian bears the unfortunate luck of unknowning that Mr Lee is in reality Rak.
Now, the man that Won-ho searched for all months is now in his sight. Rak has been utilizing the police to deal with his foe as well s to determine the person behind the recent bombing of the drug lab. That’s the bomb that was responsible for killing Yook Pil-soon, Rak’s adoptive mother as well as injuring Rak’s little dog. At this point, Rak seeks to take revenge. Meanwhile, as we pointed out, Mr. Lee is a criminal with a brain.
We previously talked about Mr. Lee, how did Rak physically become Mr. Lee?
There is very little information concerning Rak. Even the police don’t seem to know what his real name or where he’s from. At the age of eight, Rak was discovered in one of the drug shipments that his adopted mother was receiving on a monthly basis. Mrs. Pil-soon together with her husband resolved to adopt the boy and gave him the name of their deceased son who was of same age with the boy.
Rak has no recollection of his name, His parents were addicts who eventually died of overdosing on the container ports that Mrs. Pil-soon received as a shipment. It is fair to say that the man is a puzzle even to himself!
What becomes of the investigation?
Upon recognizing in the past the person who he believes is impersonating him, Rak retaliates against Brian via brute force. He does so with the assistance of his two mute friends, Joo-yeong and Dong-yeong.
Rak puts the same wounds on Brian as that on his dog, after which Rak leads Won Ho to Brian who is trying to escape.
When they discover that they have been taken for a ride, the police are shocked beyond words. They have no solid case against Rak and he is a long way back. There is also the case of one Brian who confessed to being Mr Lee, and there are no leads.
The case is shelved by the police chief who pronounces it as a success. He does not wish to say that they have caught the wrong guy as this would paint the police in a bad light. Meanwhile, although Won Ho pretends to hand in his towel, Rak is his target. There was a reason for his paranoia and there was an implanted location tracker on Rak’s dog. Such is the case, and he manages to follow Rak, Joo-yeong and Dong-yeong without it being an open affair.
How does Believer end?
The film Nie Sheng will There is an abrupt end, which leaves you hanging. This is followed by Won Ho going to look for Rak. The two sit alone and drink coffee discussing their aspirations and future plans. The man Rak may be a criminal, but already the police have the “Mr Lee” character in their custody. By and large, Rak does not have any real evidence on this man.
The climax of the movie has a gunshot which is heard in the air; although the person who shot is not revealed to the audience.
