For Whom The Bell Tolls
What is going on between Park Jin and Ian’s Maid?
The season finale episode of Alchemy of Souls has begun, Park Jin is seen in the beginning of this episode with Maidservant Kim, predicting the future together. In her fantasies, she remembers living in a comfortable hut decorated with a beautiful yard. On her wedding day, Park Jin makes a promise to give her a home for her that fits her description. He mentions Master Lee most certainly has an interest in her but Kim cannot help herself at what a “simpleton” the leader has been.
“How could you possibly be so blind?” Park Jin questions, as he can’t believe he allowed this moment to slip away. Park Jin feels the need to rectify these offenses but Kim stalks off whilst thinking the words ‘lovingly’ in her mind which was spoken by Park Jin.
On her return from work as she is going back home, Jang-Uk is already in wait for her and listens to her concerns around her emotional breakdown. He also sweeps things around a little helping, announcing that he will be tying the knot any soon. With Kim’s mention of the groom-to-be being Mu-Deok, she gets surprised and clenches her handkerchief rudely in between her teeth.
Even Lady Heo have come to terms and are okay with the fact of Jang-Uk having sympathy for Mu-Deok as for her, she actually never stood a chance in comparison to a woman like her.
Where do you think Jin-Mu’s focus will be this time?
At the same time, it seems like Jin-Mu is planning something as he is trying hard to persuade the crown prince to join forces with him. The prince is rather quick to retort that Jang-Uk is butt-end blocked in every way, and as times are now, him being considered the one to bring forth the Kings Star by the people, it would be a hasty decision. That is, until he is told by the shifty mage that Jang-Aug may indeed be underplaying his hand.
With the Crown Prince not knowing what to do, Jin-Mu sends people in Cheonbugwan to bring him the queen’s eighty troubles soul potions and also the divination bells. As for the latter, they actually belonged to Shaman Choi and would prove to be critical to Jin-Mu’s last gamble. He plans to ring the bells in order to force the wraiths souled shifters into a frenzy. In doing so, this would SLIGHTLY activate Jang-Uk’s power with the ice stone.
Ho-Gyeong is patient and keeps staring at Woo-Tak hoping that he wakes up. Woo-Tak in fact is still alive despite having stabbed himself through the belly in the previous episode. She isn’t forgiving as she should be and lets martyr, and says that she wishes him agony because of the things that he has done to her family. Silent tears run down the cheeks of Woo-Tak.
Will Jin-Mu finally discover the real identity of Mu-Deok?
Despite being on the way to recovery, Yul is in considerable discomfort. The blood parasite, So-i, implanted within him is the current source of his suffering. So-i slips into this thought and self talks hoping that Yul is present in Jinyoo Won to be able to take the medicine and let go of the pain.
On the other hand, Park Jin is about to leave for a meeting when he remembers Maidservant Kim and goes to see her. He brings some seeds and extends his hand to her telling her that he does not mind waiting for her. Kim offers her hand to him and then grabs it firmly deciding to move at his pace. This further seals the romance that is budding between the two. Master Lee happened to observe them from a distance and felt it was not up to him to intervene. In the end, he gets overwhelmed with emotions and starts crying as he’s heartbroken by this sequence of events.
Concerning Jin, he comes to terms that he will have to kill Jin-Mu, because the latter is aware of Jang Gang’s history. We know that a dreadful wedding plot is prepared by him though. Don’t forget that, all follow in order, Jin-Mu begins to fit the whole template together and it’s clear to him that Mu-Deok is Naksu. What will happen if Mu-Deok hears the wedding bells and goes on a rampage?
While Ho-Gyeong is tearing Jinyowon apart looking for something, So-I approaches her about her tall tales. Several options of how to kill a woman come to mind but So-I covers her eyes pleading for a chance to escape and vows not to reveal any further information about Bu-Yeon until she is protected. For the time being, she comes out unscathed. So-I does manage to sneak some medicine to Yul to ease his agony.
Is the Crown Prince an ally of Jin-Mu?
The night before Dang-Gu’s grand nuptials, Crown Prince expresses himself on Mu-Deok in the most blunt manner, lighting the fuse of his anger. Later, this is helpful, because Jin-Mu sways the Crown Prince in the right direction and tells him to ruin Jang-Uk.
In the morning, however, they go through with the wedding of Dang-Gu and Cho-Yeon but naturally, the animosity between Ho-Gyeong and Park Jin remains. Mu-Deok is also nowhere in sight as she is already under the spell of Jin-Mu’s magic. And unfortunately, she slaughters quite a few sorcerers guarding Woo-Tak before heading for the main guy.
In her bridal clothing, cho-yeon rushes out in a hurry and attempts to bring Mu-Deok to her senses, but it does not work. The assassin is simply too strong. Dang-Gu also tries to intervene but it is already too late, Mu-Deok seems to actually kill Woo-Tak this time before it was actually as though she had not killed him the previous times.
Does Mu-Deok turn into a psychopathic serial killer with no control of her emotions?
“Kill those who murdered your father,” Echoes the voice of Jin-Mu, as Mu-Deok looks as though she is about to hunt down several people and slaughter them. Stepping in the room armed with the bells, Jin-Mu approaches Park Jin to tell him that Naksu is on the rampage and he needs to do something about it. It is terrifying to see one of these mages in action where we see Naksu slaughter many mages with sheer ease.
As Park-jin appears showing up with his bow, he releases an enchanted arrow in their direction when Zhang-uk jumps in the way to take the impact instead of letting it meet with its destination. The last minute change by Park Jin does not save Jang-Uk from a severe wound that leaves him open to Mu-Devok stabbing him in the stomach.
Does Jang-Uk meet his demise?
As the last drops of blood fall from his body, Jang-Uk collapses onto the floor and begs Mu-Deok to stop daydreaming. This appears to be effective, but suddenly she comes to understand what has transpired, and her face is one of dismay. Naturally, all these have been seen ahead of the last episode but that does not eliminate the emotional impact of this.
Jang-Uk’s eyes grow heavy with the sound of ringing bells but it only reminds him of her departure as Mu-Deok bails on him, leaving him on the ground to bleed to death. In the meantime, Jang-Uk’s corpse finds its way to the secret room eventually due to scuffles in this battle. This gives Jin-mu cause for action as he begs the king to exercise vengeance on Songrim for this defeat.
Now as for Ho-Gyeong, she sets out to look for Mu-Deok, a woman she is eager to learn whose body she has taken. So now the stakes are high as Cheonbugwan are also looking for her too.
What was the final scene of Alchemy of Souls season 1?
First, we know that Jang-Uk is the King’s Star A and as the pyre burns in the courtyard, the fire suddenly turns blue and a fierce fire starts raging within. Here comes Jang-Uk out of the fire! He is safe! Master Lee is watching as well because he understands this is not the time for Jang-Uk to die. The main character of the show walks calmly out of the ruins of burning stones and wood.
Lets go back to Mu-Deok who still cannot hear bells but her skin is now dry and scales. On a cliffs edge, Jin-Mu assumes this is the place of her ultimate defeat. She leaps into the waters and allows herself to sink to the lowest depth. However, hands grasp her and begin tugging her upwards towards the surface.
Is Mu-Deok going to be rescued? What will be Jang Uk’s next steps? What will happen to the fates of Songrim, Jinyowon, and Cheonbugwan? We will have to be patient and see when this show comes back later on this year!
The Episode Review
Considering that Jin-Mu’s main plan was defeated last week, this finale pretty much serves to close that up but also set up a new threat for season two. This does seem to come in the form of Mu-Deok being manipulated by the bells and now Jin-Mu having control over her.
About the sorceress, she must have been quite powerful in her time because she makes not one move to interfere with the whole bells malarkey it’s a little contrived and serves to basically promote a second season. In all fairness though, the plot could have come to a conclusion in episode nineteen, which quite simply seemed to be the end of the story. In fact, this chapter may be considered as the prologue to season 2!
Is Jin Mu and how he is making himself as the de facto inner circle member of the royal family the only problem we have? That itself is a little contrived too because shouldn’t the queen absolutely hate Jin Mu by this time? Why is she not around being chilly towards what he’s saying? Now, it could well be that the king makes an example out of songrim for these events which then plays right into Jin Mu’s hands.
All the deadlocks created at the vantage point still need to be fixed and in many ways you can understand the cliffhanger ending since we know there is another season. All the drama with Ho-Gyeong’s daughter, the ice stone, Jang-Uk’s new purpose and so on should hopefully all be back later this year.
The first season is worth watching as the mishmash of romance, fantasy, and drama has once again made it to the hit list of Netflix. Will the sequel be equally great? Let’s wait and see.
