In Episode 5 of A Virtuous Business, Jeong-suk is embarrassed to witness Seong-su’s surprise appearance, who seems to be overly affectionate with Mi-hwa. She goes home with them, but it appears that In-tae has permitted him to stay there until he finds another job. That’s vicious news now that Mi-hwa and Seong-su are in the same house. Seong-su assures that they will be in contact and clarifies that he intends to be with them again.
After all, Jeong Suk is also distracted by this and when he ruins Min-ho’s breakfast, he turns to his mother and asks her to assist him. He requests for clay and some sort of candy, and she obliges. Jeong-suk is cool about this but does remember that she has lost her purse. She had left it in the car with Da-hyun, who holds it now.
There is no animosity between Da-hyun and Seong-su either as he slightly eavesdropped on Da-hyun and Seong’s conversation about rekindling their relationship. Seong-su has chewing gum but Da-hyun simply calls him a piece of s**t and tells him to pick up his trash. He glares at him and Sungsu strode away ultimately. Da-hyun in turn gives Jeong-suk her purse and they thank each other.
As Jeong-suk explains the results of the survey in front of the team, others realize that they know quite well what the most sought-after products are. However, as the vibrators rank rather high, there is a need to seek alternative methods of expanding their customer base. The answer may well lie with the chairman’s spouse, if they manage to persuade her, this would greatly assist their trade as all those underneath her would be inclined to pursue the trade as well.
Geum-hui believes this is a good decision, but the same cannot be said for Won-bong. He’s proper pessimistic about the whole thing and doesn’t think they have a snowball’s chance of this. Jeong-suk is also not in the same wavelength however, she is always looking for ways to make this work. She addresses Seo-yeon who proposes that they take advantage of suffering and say that they may be close to Ms Heo. The scheme is launched and all the group’s efforts are directed towards spreading some gossip. Obviously, Geum-hui is the bait here as well, Young-ja takes it completely.
Geum-hui goes all in with how her husband acted like a beast after looking at her sexy underwear, and just like that, the remain gang show and it all falls into place. Heo promises to cover the cost of all these undergarments heads, he loves how things are falling into the real estate shop because Geum-hui needs help.
Meanwhile, at a police station, supposed to be strategic, the Da-hyun unfortunately revealed himself with a burn mark on his upper arm. The Chief sees it, does not hide his curiosity, while of course Detective Na shifts the attention to himself and even more so to his problems.
A cut on his side thanks to some school’s children.
Now Da-hyun recollects this and bears in mind his earlier conversation with the nun. There was apparently a big fire in one of the surrounding areas, and this lady took the babe and said she will look for a new family for him. This saved the woman’s life, who was Catholic and wore a wooden rosary ring on her finger. She was also seen with a ticket to Geumje and looked as if she belonged there. This is why Da-hyun puts himself in such risks, for he wishes to know the whereabouts of his mother.
After every plan has gone through well that night, the ladies are surprised the next day when they discover the Chairman Eom has been having ‘fun’ with another woman. Not Heo because it was her husband who cautioned her when she wore a costume some minutes earlier. But, infuriatingly, he went to meet this other woman. He seems to have got into affairs long back and this is not the first time he has been unfaithful.
But a shocking end to the meeting is when Ms Heo walks out of the real estate shop. She is proud to say that the product was so useful that she never took any sleep at all. This time she has made up her mind that other women from the club are going to check the products out as well. The others do, however, feel bad especially knowing that she is faking it. This is her coping mechanism, and Jeong-suk understandably sympathizes with her for the circumstances.
As she explains to Jeong-suk, her mother did not want to be called a divorcee and bear the stigma that went with it. It was something that was bound to be everywhere she went and this gives a lot of things for Jeong-suk to consider.
In the evening, Geum-hui dangles a red slip over her husband’s neck, which arouses him. She tells him to come home in the afternoons with great news. So earlier, when he told her he’d wear the red dress during the time when he is meant to be selling the products to Ms Heo and with the chairman’s wife buying underwear from him, he finally comes through but only in dreams anyway. In reality, he finds it difficult to take a button from his shirt off, but it is good enough to Geum-hui to abandon her decision and concentrate on issuing a threat to her husband instead.
Da-hyun’s actions have been compared to those of a serial arsonist who was active for upwards of three decades, and although that may or may not be true, we did learn that there was a serial arsonist more than 30 years ago. Da-hyun is keen to figure this out and finding some cold cases thoroughly investigates.
That afternoon In-tae is seen with some big news which he wants to share with Jeong-suk. It happens Mil-hwa is pregnant. It has already been six weeks and they have even started buying things for their baby off the first baby cargo. He calls it joyous but Jeong-suk understands that this is probably Seong-su’s children however, Mi-hwa does say that she doesn’t want to agitate the situation because it won’t end well “for either one of them”.
This issue gets worse when Seong-su goes home that afternoon and decides to have some fun with Min-ho. Jeong-suk takes him, and he turns the situation around immediately, saying he is the one who is wronged. Seong-su considers it and his thoughts say that it was just a moment and a blunder but when he learns that Mi-ha is expecting a child, he is unnerved but later begins cursing Jeong-suk’s mother and questioning her faithfulness to Min-ho. In the end, he sneaks out without even saying goodbye to Min-ho who is sad because he wants them all as one happy family. It makes things difficult for her, and she has to think things over for a little while.
The Episode Review
So Jeong-suk pulls through at the end and finally, it gauls her to allow Seong-su to have one last happy family picture, after which she promises to completely destroy everything in sight, just as Seong-su had done to her. It may seem a bit petty but it’s rather effective and does bring the point across that she is not to be under estimated.
The show has defiantly tipped the balance of power away from the traditional Korean male-dominated relationships to put the women in that position but never to the detriment of making any of the males weak.
A Virtuous Business has been a good watch and the main takeaway obviously stems from the fact that ending but in the same breath the way the Chairman’s wife exudes herself when being rejected is a highlight in itself. It is rather heartbreaking how she has to make up reasons saying that her relationship is great whereas in fact, she is rather isolated and deserves far more. This is something that Jeong-suk can of course empathise with quite literally after everything that Seong-su did to her.
