In the Do-hyeon is actually the son of Geum-hui as he is the assumed heir and last name holder for the family, Jeong-suk tries to maintain a calm face after discovering the initials on the shirt worn by the woman in episode 11 of A Virtuous Business. This is where all assumptions about Son Geum hwi having been born as Do-hyeon’s mother become stronger.
The big feast goes on all the same, as Won-bong rounds it all up with a big speech where he thanks the invitees. He also reminds them that health comes first and there is a rather comical moment where he wants to finish the speech but Geum-hui interrupts him.
Jeong-suk and Do-hyeon are certainly not in a good place though. But the bond has clearly been stretched since Jeong-suk has a tendency to artificially maintain silence and avoids allowing Do-hyeon to spend the night over at home even despite the fact that Min-ho urges so. Jeong-suk seems to be in a turmoil of thoughts while Do-hyeon receives fresher distressing news and so believes the situation is back to square one in his search for the mother.
Still, having made this decision, Geum-hui has begun shooting some product pictures and engages Dae-geun, who had worked at a photography school before dropping out. Dae-geun is rather quirky and amusing, especially since other women are also present to watch him run and take various pictures.
Dae-geun happened to invite Ju-ri over to his place like he has promised that night. She does look different however since she has straightened her hair and is dressed in a more toned down outfit. All this is so that people won’t recognize her when she is outside and it does the job perfectly.
The two drink whiskey together but Dae-geun’s voice breaks in a tear when he discusses his passion of photography. He gets so intoxicated and the moment he comes outside looking for Ju-ri to come inside the couple is in for a surprise. Ms Heo has returned and she chases them with a broom across the garden, appalled at the sight of them together.
Later in the morning when Ms Heo has cooled off, she addresses Dae-geun and Ju-ri in theri normal tone. There is a lease which she has prepared already and if the two wouldn’t separate then she’s getting this salon with her out the pair.
Dae-geun gets up and screams to his mother that what he and Ju-ri share is something different. He believes nobody which includes his mother who has disregarded him his entire life can ruin what he wants to build with her.
For Ms. Heo, ‘no’ is never the answer and at one point they find themselves at Geum-hui’s, defeated and with nowhere else to go. Won-bong doesn’t think it is the best idea but in the end agrees. But again, it doesn’t go well and things are turbulent as Won-bong tries to adapt to living with the two young women.
At lunch, Jeong-suk joins the two and once again the connection between Geum-hui and Do-hyeon is getting stronger. The two certainly have similarities, such as their great love for pepper corn on their food. Geum-hui even proposes to build her house alongside extra dishes so that they can eat together in the future.
After some time, Jeong-suk calls Do-hyen to discuss the matter of the search for his mother. He does not expect much, as we would consider Geum-hui to be unlikely mother due to her chronology. But there is a wrinkle in the story and she is unable to keep the information regarding the embroidery connection to herself anymore.
Do-hyeon walks over to Geum-hui and shows what he has got. She’s very standofish and says that there is no way that she understands what he is trying to find. The truth is, she is bent and unable to compose herself. When Won-bong brings her a new scarf and meat while cheerfully exclaiming how joyful and happy she should be, Geum-hui finds it really hard to feel joyful and happy.
Do-hyeon that night explains whatever transpired between him and Geum-hui to Jeong-suk. And with this, he has no doubt now that the woman he has always known as his mother is Geum-hui.
The next day however is awkward when the ladies come to meet for the first time to discuss the details in their brochure and just how they will distribute it. Jeong-suk and Geum-hui are completely silent as Geum-hui does not see the point in discussing anything regarding the detective. She even suggests that she would rather not see him in the street afterwards.
But then, Do-hyeon holds her back and quite bluntly asks why she neglected him. She accepts that when she was a teen, she partied hard without thinking through and got knocked up by mistake. She felt ashamed to face people, that’s the reason she deserted him.
Geum-hui goes on to say that he should let her go and get on with his life while she is wishing for nothing but peace. While it is really harsh, it at least puts an end to the search of Do-hyeon.
Quite the contrary it is actually Ju-ri who manages to talk some sense into her that night. If there is someone who can empathize with her, it is Ju-ri. She mentions how difficult it was in the beginning, but not even once has she regretted having her first born. Being a mother to Dong-u has given her too many reasons to smile and it is something which Geum-hui completely lacks.
The following day, Do-hyeon is sick, so Jeong-suk gets him some medicine. If metal ulcers do exist, Geum-hui might as well be one as she gets wind of the fact that his fever has subsided. She says that she got overwhelmed by the whole scenario with Do-hyeon and believed it to be better for both of them to live apart.
Jeong-suk, on the other hand, shatters her picture of him being some trustworthy and respectable man by telling her that all this while he has been longing to be reunited with his mother. Geum-hui is confused and on top of that she now knows that Won-Bong has paid attention the entire episode.
The two have a light moment when Won-bong understands why Geum-hui did not want a child. Won-bong had his inklings that Geum-hui had a secret but could not understand what it was. He also found the baby clothes but understood she wished to have them buried so he went along with it. He even assures her that she does not need to worry as he has no plans of leaving her anytime soon.
And Geum-hui does follow through which is why she goes to Do-hyeon’s house. She says sorry and adds that it is a “mum’s fault” which initiates a warm hug. Such a warm moment, since Do-hyeon finally shows some weakness and lets his guard down around her.
The Episode Review
A Virtuous Business has reached an ending as far as Do-hyeon’s journey to find his mum goes, and perhaps a few other subplots come into play. The mess between Ju-ri and Dae-geun was always inevitable to be messy and sadly, Ms Heo has escalated the situation to the worst extent possible.
We don’t see much of Yeong-bok here as well which is quite ironic because if there is one person who understands the essence of being a mother, it is her. But that conversation with Ju-ri certainly gave some clarity in regard to some matters for her.
This argument is further supported by the final chat with Won-bong, who develops as a loving husband. It is a significant departure from what we could see him at the early stages of the season and undoubtedly a highlight.
Now, as with this mystery, all focus turns towards the finale which at least promises to be an emotional one.
