A Virtuous Business – K-drama Episode 10

The Disappeared Children

A Virtuous Business episode opens with Du-seok handcuffed and escorted into a cell after getting jailed for unspeakable crimes. It transpires that, Jong-seon was not the driver but one of the passengers. Geum-hui is pained to hear this admission, but what angers her more is the image of a defenseless man lying profusely bleeding on the road. However, she feels somewhat relieved after knowing it was the same Jong-seon who reported the emergency that later helped in saving Won-bong’s life.

Amid all these unfortunate events, Yeong-bok chokes on her words as she apologizes and expresses her sorrows. From what is evident, Geum-hui is a significant figure in her life and her thoughts are all displaced. Jeong-Suk however masters the transformed attitude she self-constructs and motivates Yeong-bok to confront the conflict instead of evading it and seek a resolution through an aggressive approach instead.

Yeong-bok’s first born daughter also gives her some supportive words saying she should be courageous and stand strong. Her daughter goes on to state that even she believed that what was going in their family involving Jong-seon was a repetition of some earlier patterns, and Jong-seon was not on some shift as Yeong-sok has claimed to their cousins.

It’s worth mentioning though that Won-bong seems to be on the same page as well. He decides to remind Geum-hui that these are her friends and she doesn’t just let people get close to herself so easily. Still, she keeps it close to her heart when Yeong-bok comes inside looking for her to talk to her.

Out in the open, the feelings in Yeong-bok’s heart fly out. Forgiveness is not something she is expecting but all she is trying to do is alleviate the pain Yu-yunkow has been causing her. Yeong-bok even states that bringing up who made the call to the ambulance was uncalled for as those are things Yu Hwang-ho needs to focus on and not her.

Just as Geum-hui prepares to leave sight, Yeong-bok all of a sudden bends her body forward in agony. It is her stomach. Geum-hui quickly takes her inside and thank God, the baby is completely fine. Geum-hui mentions that she is fretting over the baby and is more concerned for her rather than worried about Geum-hui, but as she begins to cry and howl, the two seem to revive their bonds and are mostly back on normal speaking terms.

Jong-seon, in contrast, goes to see Won-bong and simply says sorry to him. But words never suffice, so he tells Jong-seon the responsibility of his gestures. He is ready for it and this seems to have sorted the situation where the settlement has settled. The change in the sentencing is profound. Jong-seon is placed in a detention facility and will be tried for some time but there is a chance that he will have a parole soon.

At the same time, Ju-ri and Dae-geun keep on their flings although the latter is having difficulty in finding locations to take them on a date. They cannot even have a motel date since the latter’s mother owns most of the motels in that area. On the other hand, it appears that his mother is leaving for an out of town trip soon so Dae-geun sees this as the best moment to ask Ju-ri to his place.

Jeong-suk, however, is back at work and summons the troops to sit with her in a discussion about a possible brochure that could help them go up a gear on their sales gear. Picking products for men, the others and Ju-ri figure that Ju-ri actually has a boy friend. She plans an at home date, suggesting that it is the easiest because from there, they can get to the fun stuff pretty quickly. Jeong-suk here is quite innocent and somewhat of a virgin, although she is somewhat disturbed towards the end of the episode, as she is taken out to dinner at Do-hyeon’s house. Can things get steamy? Well, that is what her thought is like after being around the women and she even fantasizes about him coming out of the shower after it is all over.

When Jeong-suk has her turn at washing the dishes, she is pleased to encourage Do-hyeon to take out the board game from her bag. Except that he reaches into a different bag. It is the bag with sex toys in it and that she promises to demonstrate how to use them one at a time with him holding the whip and handcuffs. When she comes to understand where she went wrong, the couple quickly make amends and settle down to play with each other and board games.

Throughout the game, Do-hyeon also informs Jeong-suk that she ought to proceed to Hong Kong. It’s a part of the Monopoly game however for the uninitiated, ‘going to Hong Kong’ is Korean euphemism for ‘wanting to give you climax’. Jeong-suk explains the at-home dates and the two end up eventually kissing, with Do-hyeon affirming that such act is what he desires.

Nonetheless, all these nice feelings are cut off by the Captain, who brings some messages for Do-hyeon. He has a file concerning the arson in his drawer. He talked to a younger colleague who was close to the investigation and it is said that there is a house for children in Yeongeup which may be an important lead.

It has been forced to shut down only lately but it might be relevant to the orphanage. 20 children were taken for overseas adoption but 11 were not from the orphanage and files relating to them are missing. There are some photographs available though including one of a three year old who resembles Yeong-ho’s daughter. It would appear that these children were probably being sold as there is one won written amount on each file.

No, she has a good alibi, and neither Did the midwives have anything to do with the kidnappings. But either way Do-hyeon Winded be in charge of attending her. Nevertheless, she does not achieve much as she has Alzheimer’s. As a part of her team, two assistants help her as they have worked with her for two decades. There was another assistant, the mother of Okyeop. Jeong-suk and Do-hyeon now work together in an attempt to locate her and it looks as if one of the women might have a lead.

Okyeop gets killed forty years ago while Do Min Ye confirms that her son is Kim Okyeop, so it can’t be him. Min Ye is a woman who owned a video shop. And since do Hyeon sits next to her, the owner must express her curtail concern as to why he is inquiring with respect to the position of midwife’s assistant. In this exchange, she recollects the miserable episode when her son died because of their inability to afford healthcare.

Do-hyeon falls down on the floor for no reason as they converse. Sun-ae was the one who snatched the children when they were younger. She abducted them and thought she was setting them free for a better existence elsewhere. In Sun-ae’s perspective, she has been doing a service to the children.

She holds Do-hyeon hostage and he simply watches the unfolding events and the surrounding as if it was all a surprise to him. However, Sun-ae states that the children she had abducted had a little cross tattooed on their foreheads for easy identification in future. He, on the other hand, is one of those people. It looks like he is also an adoptee and she gags him. But not before a lamp gets turned over and causes the fire to start.

Jeong-suk appears at the video rental shop in the form of banging doors and seeks to offer an explanation. While at it, she saw Do-hyeon’s notebook on the table, which made her rush in and save him from the burning flames.

Do-hyeon receives great attention at the hospital for his injuries. He also gets a parcel sent to him by his adoptive parents. In that parcel with him was a letter which includes embroidery on that includes the initials K.B.H. It is an additional lead in the case which could very well be connected to his real name.

All the characters, however, start converging for the lunch. Do-hyeon and Jeong-suk attended the lunch together as an official couple, and Jeong-suk goes to pick up her old stove. While doing so, however, she causes an accident which moves one of the baskets containing clothes with monograms embroidered on them: K.B.H. Out of the clothes, Do-hyeon was found in; these were the same three initials. Could Do-hyeon’s mother be some part of this deal?

The Episode Review

The case concerning the fire and kid adoption of Do-hyeon was intense in this particular episode, and it is a gap that is sure to be solved in the next episode. At this point in time, however, there is drama involving Geum-hui and Yeong-bok where the latter’s baby turns out to be the one who enfolds this drama in a good way.

I guess it was rather predictable that they were going to go this way, however for me it would have been better to see more focussing on the actual ‘virtuous business’ as well as the character subplots. It seems as if this has been sidelined and we are not receiving as much as we used to.

When we earlier had the feeling that this was an entertaining approach about the girls, who were also the main ‘selling point’ of the hormones plot, it is not exactly the same these days. That being said, the comedy is quite funny and the whole date of Jeong-suk and Do-heyon is hysterical. These handcuffs, then the hearing ‘hon kong’, those are probably the best of this episode.

This has still been one of the most exciting watches, especially since the ending does quite a good job in providing a potential avenue for where this one could progress from.
