Netflix romance is a adventure with all the excitement of reading the phone book
Two words can perfectly encapsulate the most recent offering from Netflix When Love Rains inoffensive simple. This 90-minute footage is not something that one would describe as particularly remarkable or special, nor does it do anything to effectively differentiate itself from the rest. It’s not the most epic experience of one’s lifetime but it’s not also a waste considering it has nothing remarkably surprising. One practically won’t ponder over it long after the credits have rolled.
A tale of a fisherman, Elliott, with a sad history in this case is illuminating. The guy has always been barely making a living at the docks, but he has a wonderful voice. That said, he does not wish to make a major step towards stardom which leads to an inner conflict.
Elliott’s talent can be seen at a small club where he is performing with his friend Oliver, while Suzanne and her daughter Lilly are in the audience. What follows from here is an exceptional opportunity that in every way changes Elliott’s life. But the question is will he get haunted by his demons.
Hung over this question is the majority of the film and soon it’s getting clear that Elliott and Lilly actually have more in Common than they first thought. Although there is a personalized professional assistance that enables him to produce music, the two of them are bound together and become closer as they are caused to resurge the past traumatic experiences. Are there faint flickers of romance on the horizon? Given this one’s billed has a romantic drama, I think one can already suss out the answer to that question! Well the film does not have many of these depending on the protagonist at least not in external means. There is no difficult love; no misunderstanding and not much for Elliott in the way of obstacles when trying to become a star In fact nothing. Than behind the external greatness that’s put on top of Elliott, inside his head, he is as weak as he was before.
This perspective of Elliott’s past is better described as the movie progresses towards its final act when Oliver plays a larger role. And one will certainly learn the truth about what actually happened to Elliott sometime in the middle of the film.
On the visual side, A Beautiful Life is quite good and a huge portion of this is due to the music. Since this is a romance that is nearly entirely focused on music, it is a great benefit that this title has a very strong soundtrack. The last song played by Elliott is also great and conveys the themes of the film quite well how music is capable of so much more than merely stating things.
Everything about that is fine and dandy, but none of it is really anything worth latching onto too tightly. The film doesn’t really have that particular something that allows it to stand among a plethora of similar offerings. In the end, this is much more of a one and done than anything you’d ever consider adding to your playlist; enjoy it while you can, but it probably won’t last long.
