We all thought it was just a matter of time once Amazon in its acquisition of MGM in March 2022 included 007 movies, that there would be a spin off to this federation.
If first starts with a control series in which 9 ordinary people are given the sole incentive of a cash prize of a whooping 100 million dollars, each winning pair will be put into the world of 007 and have the control of one another. As expected based on the inspirations taken from the previous bound movies, getting to win the money is quite a task.
The contestants are made to step outside their zones and do extreme things that this super spy does for breakfast. The idea of scaling rock faces, diving deep into oceans, evading snakes and crocodiles, or climbing the outside of a train are just snippets of what the contestants have to go through because this is exactly what the show talks about bond.
Not just the extreme adventures do the hardcore bond fans associate with bond and around which the spin off has been based on, but as a character bond also when he further is seen risking his life with multiple flashbacks of intense dramatic themes swirling around him, just to win riches. Well some themes include a little mixture here and their from various directors like John Barry.
Add muscial to the list of countries where certain challenges takes place. These include Jamaica (Dr No), Italy (For Your Eyes Only), and Switzerland (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service). Now, everyone knows this from the franchise too the Aston Martin DB5, the various casinos, and the array of high end, stylish gadgets that were shown in the films.
The Controller is played by Brian Cox and I think he’s the best performer in the series. He is the one who has to set the tasks and missons to the contestants. Every task builds up the contestants towards more and more fortune. I would say at Large, he has been portrayed as an antagonist however it’s quite vague as to which faction he belongs to, if any! While he has said that his character has a more actionable style like Scaramanga or Blofeld, I beg to differ!
Certain contestants do not go far in the competition and a good amount of them even begin with challenging scenarios. In the end, these contestants either get eliminated from the competition or simply decide to back down.
We would hope they were not trying to escape by jumping into a lagoon full of man eating sharks or hungry crocodiles after losing, but seeing that this is a Bond spin-off, what is my guess is as good as yours!
Among those on whom we do tend to focus the most, there are a few that are more memorable than the others. These include James and Joey Bone, aka The Bone Brothers, two siblings who live in South London, a British couple Kamara and Josh who are husband and wife, and James and Sam, a father and his son who are from Belfast. The distinguishing factor for them is that they do not wish to remain in this competition solely for the cash prize.
The show is full of exhilarating adventures that James and Joey, the brothers, get to experience together. They also get to understand their brothers deeper. Kamara and Josh appear on this program as a way for Josh to rebuild his self-esteem after having been attacked badly a few years ago and now he’s traumatized and scared. Also, for James and Sam, the journey they do is the best opportunity to spend time together with their father, whom they only get to see when he is not working offshore on oil rigs for half of the year, which is the case for a five year period.
It adds another dimension to the series when we understand the emotions behind this show. Watching Josh scale the peak of a volcano with almost no one around him to while he overcomes his fear of heights and anxiety with trauma on his mind is very touching knowing how much this trek means to him.
Also, when James and Joey jump on the sides of a moving train together it becomes heartwarming to see the two father and son spend some time together and enjoy each other’s company whilst having some fun, although these are just moments but they will go a long way towards healing the cracks in their relationship.
Contestants like these see the prize money as once again not an important factor in the overall picture, therefore we understand well that even if they lose the game, there are still some factors that are definitely far more valuable than money. Still, the urge to get their hands on the prize drives them further and further as they cross countries searching for the silver suitcases needed to know the questions they should answer.
Winning these suitcases however is not child’s play for them as our contestants have to go through so much physically and mentally in order to win them. In the first episode itself, Kamara has to climb up an immense crane to reach the briefcase whilst Josh is waiting perhaps a little nervously the other side of the world for his fearless wife. As the series progresses, both of them have to go into a crocodile pit to get the briefcase which should scare the bejesus out of you when the crocs are eyeing them with their gaping jaws.
The jaunts that every pair goes for offer everything you would expect in a James Bond-style adventure, and they are even more tension-filled than the actuality of the films, simply because instead of master spies, the participants are common people that most of us can identify with.
Which of course begs the question, for those who are fans of James Bond or rather a fan of survival reality shows, I think it is fair to say that you should like 007: Road To A Million. It is quite an interesting series with every element of suspense that in most cases depicts a James Bond like adventures, therefore, it can be a recommendable series.
And as the franchise seems to plan out a second installment based on the ending, should you always wish to lead the life of a super spy, you may want to endure the application process yourself. After all, you only live twice erm once, right?
